Katrin Hanusch is a German/British artist based in London working across sculpture, installation, drawing and performance. Her practice begins with materials, objects and situations that carry histories of use, production, consumption and abandonment: discarded electronics, casting waste, found objects and architectural fragments.
Hanusch interferes with these materials and the systems around them, changing their conditions to discover what else they might become. Her process moves between control and chance, intuition and analysis, allowing materials to resist, redirect and complicate her intentions.
She deliberately creates conditions in which opposing forces have to remain together long enough to produce something neither side could produce alone. Rather than resolving contradiction, she makes it tangible—bringing attraction and repulsion, strength and fragility, order and disorder, the useful and the useless into the same body.
This can involve cutting, dismantling, burning, recombining or otherwise disrupting what is already there. For Hanusch, interference is a form of inquiry: a way of testing assumptions, exposing tensions and making alternatives physical.
Her works hold opposing energies in suspension until something begins to hum — a state in which contradiction becomes productive and another possibility can emerge.
